Love and Sacrifice

April 26th, 2011

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16 (KJV)

Since we just celebrated Easter, I thought I would bring up this verse, giving us the reason at the heart of the matter – God loves us.

This is probably the best know and most loved verse in the entire Bible.  It is the one we hear from childhood on, the very first thing we memorize in many cases.  It carries such impact and authority that it brings comfort in diverse situations and encourages us in the darkest of hours.

It also tells us the nature of God’s love.  It is (and He is) benevolent and giving.  Also, it is a love that is willing to make the greatest of sacrifices.

That, in a nutshell, gives us a view of what God has offered us. Now, what do we do to reciprocate?

Sadly, we often don’t want to give the way that God has given.  We want to receive God’s love, but don’t want to make the sacrifices that show it.

Sometimes when something is asked of us, we try to avoid the sacrifice that would make us have to alter our lifestyles,  show compassion on the outcast, or go out of our way for the sake of others.

We want the love without the commitment.  We want God to do all the giving while we do all the getting.

But the fact is that if we are to be partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4), to be like our Father, we should be willing to sacrifice, to give, and to love others as He has loved us.

It isn’t always easy.  That is why it is a sacrifice.  No servant is greater than his lord (John 13:16) and we need to follow the example when it is asked of us.

Be Blessed and have a great day!

Ain’t Skeered

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”  Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV)

“The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”  Psalm 118:6 (KJV)

We hear verses like these quoted a lot when we face times of concern.  It is always someone else who is not facing what we are facing.  They are trying to encourage us, but often they just echo as words to us.

We have that thought or feeling, “Easy for you to say! It’s me in this mess, not you!”  This is true, but since it is you (or me) in that mess, we don’t need to be focused on someone who is just trying to help with a little encouragement.  We actually need to take their advice and count on God.

There are a great many things in life that are easier said than done.  And when faced with worrisome and awful circumstances, it can be difficult to walk out our faith.  It can be difficult not to be overcome with fear and feelings.

It is during these times that the relationship with God counts.  It is a prerequisite for going through without going under.  God has to be more than a passing acquaintance,  we need fellowship with Him.  Then we can lean on Him and depend on Him to bring us through.  In our time of need, our urgent prayers take on new meaning, and can serve to deepen this relationship.

Through this relationship, we can continue forward in faith and not be overcome by fear and distress, but overcome fear and distress,  obtaining a victory that is ordained by God.

Then we can come out the other side of our troubles with a stronger faith, a deeper relationship, and a greater strength and wisdom, having the knowledge that we don’t need to fear, because God goes before us, preparing the way.

Be blessed and have a great day!

How’s The Fruit Business Going?

April 6th, 2011

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”  John 15:1-2 (KJV)

How many people would buy fruit from a roadside stand that had a sign that read like this:

“WORM FILLED APPLES AND MOLDY STRAWBERRIES HERE! COMPLETELY ROTTEN PEACHES WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!”

Nobody would stop there unless is was the Health Department to shut the stand down.

As witnesses for Christ, we need to stop and think about this.  What kind of fruit is being produced in our lives that others can see?

If our lives produce good fruit, other people are drawn to it.  If others see qualities in us that they can respect and admire, they are more likely to want something in their lives to produce that.

If we produce bad fruit and undesirable attitudes and qualities, people will not be drawn to that, just like they don’t want rotten peaches and moldy strawberries.

Allowing God to work in our hearts can produce good behavior and attitudes in us, the right kind of “high quality produce” that everyone wants.  We need to be obedient and faithful, not only through the growing process in our lives but also the pruning process that will help us to produce more abundant fruit.

Although the pruning and purging are not always so pleasant, it is important for us as well.  The production of right behavior and results, the good fruit, needs to be bearing continuously.  God involves Himself in the process of tending the vine, to make sure that this happens.  As we allow Him, He can bring out the good fruit that benefits us personally as well as those around us.

Be blessed and have a great day.
